Paying for therapy

Fees and insurance

Straight answers about cost, and the ways our clients make therapy fit their budget.

We're a private-pay practice, so how you use insurance is up to you. You can submit your sessions for out-of-network reimbursement or leave insurance out of it entirely. HSA and FSA cards work either way.

Your session fee

Sessions range from $210 to $285, depending on your clinician.

That rate is the same for individuals, couples, and families. Most sessions are 50 minutes; if one runs longer, the fee adjusts to match.

Your clinician's exact fee comes up on the intro call, before you book a first session.

Lower-cost care through our Institute

Through our Institute, supervised Clinical Interns offer therapy at a reduced fee set by your household size and income.

Who you'd see

A Clinical Intern: a graduate student in counseling, seeing clients under the supervision of our Clinical Director, who is an NBCC Approved Clinical Supervisor, and a team of Virginia board-approved supervisors. You'll find their bios on Our team.

What it costs

$10 to $50 a session, on a sliding scale. Almost everyone qualifies for some reduction.

What's included

Every kind of therapy we offer, for individuals, couples, children and teens, and families.

How to start

Ask for the Institute in your request. The intern we match you with will send a short application if you'd like a rate below $50.

Our staff clinicians can also see a limited number of clients at a reduced rate, set by the same short income-based application.

Groups

A group costs less than individual therapy, and each group's page lists its price. You can pay with an HSA or FSA card and get a superbill, just as with one-on-one sessions.

Using your insurance

We're an out-of-network provider. You pay at the time of your session, and we give you a superbill, a detailed receipt you submit to your insurance company. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, your insurer pays back part of the cost.

Three questions to ask your insurer:

  1. Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health care?
  2. Do I have an out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met?
  3. How much will you reimburse for a session, and how do I submit a superbill?

Paying for sessions

Nearly every client keeps a card on file, including HSA and FSA cards, so there's nothing to handle when a session ends. Cash and checks work too.

If you need to cancel

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. If you cancel with less notice, or miss a session, you'll be charged the full session fee. Your time is set aside just for you, and a late opening is hard to fill.

Your right to a Good Faith Estimate

As a private-pay client, you have the right to a Good Faith Estimate: a written estimate of what your care is expected to cost. You can ask us for one at any time. If a bill comes in at least $400 above your estimate, you can dispute it.

Questions people ask us

Can I use insurance for couples therapy?

Sometimes, yes. Coverage for couples work varies from case to case. Some of it qualifies as family therapy, which insurance can reimburse. Bring it up on your intro call, and we'll talk through what might apply to you.

What happens on the intro call?

It's a free, 30-minute call with the clinician we think fits you best, based on your request. You'll talk about what's bringing you in and what you're hoping for, plus the practical stuff: fees, scheduling, and in person or virtual. It's also a chance for both of you to sense the fit. If someone else on our team is a better match, they'll make the introduction. You decide what's next.

How to get started

Still weighing your options? You can talk them through on the intro call.

1

Send a short form. It takes about two minutes. Tell us who you're looking for help for and what's going on. A sentence or two is plenty.

2

Talk with a clinician. The clinician we think fits you best, based on your request, calls you for a free, 30-minute intro call. You'll talk through what you're looking for, fees, and format, and make sure it's the right fit.

3

Book your first session. We'll send you a link to schedule. Most people start in one week or less.

There's no commitment on the call. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you, and help you find who is.
